Ashley Wagner, a figure skater, faced sexual assault at just 17 years old. Despite this trauma, she went on to win a World Silver Medal in 2016 and now courageously shares her story.

Wagner’s encounter with John Coughlin happened in June 2008 at an after-party with her national skating team in Colorado Springs. Staying overnight at the host’s house, she found herself in a helpless and uncomfortable situation when Coughlin inappropriately approached her while she was on the couch. It was a clear case of unwanted attention where consent was disregarded.

Years later, Wagner decided to speak out against sexual abuse and share her own experience in the hopes of making a difference. Now 28 and retired, she has joined the #MeToo movement, advocating for the well-being and empowerment of athletes to ensure they are respected and feel confident in their own skin.

Bridget Namitoka, a friend of Wagner’s and also a skater, was another victim of harassment by Coughlin, making a total of three known cases. Although an investigation was initiated, Coughlin passed away before any conclusions could be reached.

Ashley Wagner exemplifies strength and resilience. Her advocacy work is inspiring for athletes everywhere, promoting a safer and more inclusive environment for all.For more intriguing reads, you can also check out our recent coverage of the NFL.
