Ryan Russell publicly shares that he is bisexual.
In a changing landscape where bisexuality is increasingly accepted in the United States, the world of sports is also seeing transformations. Athletes are feeling empowered to be more authentic about their sexual orientation, and Ryan Russell is embracing this shift.
A former NFL player, Russell was a member of the Buccaneers in 2017 but had to step back from the game after sustaining a shoulder injury, sidelining him for the remainder of the year and preventing his return for the 2018 season.
After years of keeping his bisexuality private, Russell is now looking towards a future where he can live openly and honestly. Given the attitudes towards bisexuality in society not long ago, it’s understandable why he kept this part of himself concealed for so long.
Russell aims to be a representative of LGBTQ culture within the NFL, acknowledging the discomfort he felt from telling white lies to protect his identity and how it affected his relationships with his teammates.
Although Russell attempted to make a comeback to the NFL this year, he faced challenges and was not able to return just yet. He is focused on training and hopes to re-enter the league in 2020.
